Chapter – 32
This Is Not the Scene She Imagined!
In the Gu family living room—
Gu Chengnian sat on the leather sofa, his fingers tapping unconsciously on the armrest, while his parents’ endless chatter about the engagement buzzed in his ears.
“Next Saturday is also Nian’an’s birthday. Your dad and I prepared a gift for her. You remember to prepare one too,” Mrs. Gu reminded.
Mr. Gu looked at his son with satisfaction in his eyes. “In the blink of an eye, you’re about to be engaged. You have to take responsibility from now on…”
Qin Shuangya quickly added, nodding,
“Remember to treat Nian’an well in the future. Her parents are overseas and can’t return, but our family must show proper etiquette…”
“Dad, Mom, I don’t want to get engaged.”
Gu Chengnian suddenly spoke. His voice wasn’t loud, but the entire living room went silent instantly.
Qin Shuangya looked at him nervously.
“What’s wrong all of a sudden? Did you have a fight with Nian’an?”
Gu Chengnian frowned impatiently.
“I don’t like her. Why should I get engaged to her? I’ve only ever seen her as a younger sister.”
Smash!
Mr. Gu threw his teacup onto the coffee table. “Nonsense! What rubbish are you spouting?!”
“It’s the truth. And you’ve never asked for my opinion,” Gu Chengnian raised his head, eyes stubborn. “Can you stop forcing me?”
“You—you—you! What nonsense!” Seeing his son’s serious expression, Mr. Gu’s face turned livid with anger.
“All these years you never once said you were unwilling. The invitations are already sent, and now you’re saying this?!”
Thinking of how Pei Nian’an bullied Wen Ying at the bar, Gu Chengnian felt suffocated.
“The engagement was decided by you without asking me. I don’t like her, and I refuse to marry a spoiled, unreasonable heiress.”
“You must have lost your mind!” Mr. Gu shot to his feet.
“Do you know what kind of family the Pei family is? This isn’t up to you! Next Saturday, you will attend—properly!”
Hearing that, Gu Chengnian kicked over the coffee table in front of him, startling Qin Shuangya into a shriek.
He didn’t spare another glance at his parents’ faces—he grabbed his jacket and stormed out the door.
The engine roared as the black sports car shot out of the Gu family villa.
He rolled down the windows. Warm wind poured in, yet it still couldn’t blow away his irritation.
He drove aimlessly and unknowingly circled near the university district.
At a red light, a familiar figure appeared—Wen Ying stood at a bus stop with a canvas backpack, head lowered, looking at her phone.
On impulse, Gu Chengnian pulled up beside her and lowered the window.
“Wen Ying?”
Hearing the voice, Wen Ying looked up in surprise, the wind lifting the fine hair on her forehead.
“Senior Chengnian?”
A laugh escaped him. “It’s so late—why aren’t you home yet?”
“I just finished tutoring.” Wen Ying shook the textbooks in her hand. “Waiting for the bus.”
It was nearly 9 p.m.
“Get in. I’ll take you.”
“No need, Senior. The bus will be here soon—”
But Gu Chengnian insisted. “It’s fine. I’m free anyway. Come on.”
Wen Ying hesitated, then carefully got into the car.
The faint scent of cedar in the car made her relax a little.
“Which neighborhood do you live in?”
“We live in Jixiang Village—the urban village.” She fastened her seat belt, speaking naturally. “Thank you, Senior.”
As the car merged into traffic, the tension in his hands slowly eased.
In the rearview mirror, Wen Ying’s quiet profile was coated in the warm glow of streetlights—a sharp contrast to Pei Nian’an’s loud, aggressive image.
“Senior Chengnian, are you in a bad mood today?” Wen Ying suddenly asked softly.
He paused. “What makes you say that?”
“You’ve been frowning the whole time,” she said, tilting her head at him.
Only then did he realize his expression hadn’t relaxed. He gave a bitter smile. “It’s nothing.”
Wen Ying blinked, sensible enough not to pry further.
Silence settled in the car, broken only by the GPS directions.
At the village entrance, Wen Ying thanked him with a smile—and for a moment, he dazedly stared at her.
Then he asked,
“Wen Ying, is it okay if we exchange contact information?”
After thinking for a second, he added,
“I’m attending a banquet next Saturday. Can I invite you to be my date?”
A moment later, he clarified,
“People usually bring a female companion. You can consider it as me hiring you for the evening. Is that okay?”
His meaning was obvious. After considering briefly, Wen Ying nodded and agreed.
The next day—
When Yu Zhi entered the classroom, Pei Nian’an was already in the back row waving at her.
Yu Zhi slipped over stealthily, placing her schoolbag carefully by her feet.
“Everything ready?” Pei Nian’an whispered.
Yu Zhi patted her backpack. “All inside!”
“Good job!” Nian’an’s eyes lit up. “So what’s your plan?”
“Shh!” Yu Zhi put a finger to her lips.
At the classroom door, Wen Ying walked in holding several books.
She wore a long skirt today, hair tied in a high ponytail—fresh and clean.
The moment Pei Nian’an saw her, anger flared violently in her eyes. She elbowed Yu Zhi. “Go! Now!”
Yu Zhi watched Wen Ying sit in the front row and muttered, “Wait a bit…”
The chance came quicker than expected.
A girl called from the door, “Wen Ying, the counselor needs to see you!”
Wen Ying left a book on her desk to keep her seat and hurried out.
Yu Zhi immediately grabbed her bag and casually walked to the front.
As she passed Wen Ying’s seat, she swiftly placed the backpack onto her chair and stuffed a few bills into Wen Ying’s textbook.
She knew she shouldn’t be doing this—so the money was “compensation.”
When she returned, Pei Nian’an gave her a big thumbs-up. “Professional!”
Ten minutes later, Wen Ying came back.
Seeing the bag on her chair, she looked around puzzled.
“Whose backpack is this?”
Lin Xiaoyu next to her looked up.
“Isn’t it yours? I saw it when I came in—I thought you changed your bag.”
“No.” Wen Ying shook her head.
Lin Xiaoyu thought for a moment. “Maybe someone put it in the wrong place. Just wait for them to get it later?”
Wen Ying nodded and placed the backpack on her desk.
Suddenly—the bag moved.
“Huh?” She leaned closer. “Why is there a sound coming from inside…”
“Want to open it and check?” Lin Xiaoyu suggested, interested. “Maybe there’s a name tag on the books?”
That made sense. Wen Ying unzipped the bag.
“Ribbit!”
A fat toad leaped onto Wen Ying’s desk.
“AHHH!!! What is that?!”
Lin Xiaoyu screamed.
Wen Ying frowned at the bag full of toads, zipped it up quickly, grabbed a broom and dustpan, swept the escaped toad from the floor, and dumped it directly into the trash can.
The whole thing happened so fast that everyone around was dumbfounded.
At the last row, Yu Zhi: “…”
Honestly, only a real female lead could react like that!
Yu Zhi slowly turned to Pei Nian’an—who was frozen in disbelief.
WTF!!!
This was NOT the scene she imagined!
Wen Ying actually dared to throw her toad into the trash?!
AHHHHH! She wanted to throw the toad at Wen Ying’s head instead!!!
PK time!
