Chapter 3 – Your Smile Looks So Beautiful

“I can’t believe Lu Li actually agreed to an interview! It’s unbelievable. Our magazine has invited him several times before, but we never succeeded. This time it’s like a huge pie falling from the sky!” said a man in a floral shirt and knee-length jeans.

Another colleague added, “Exactly! It’s Lu Li we’re talking about — the most eligible bachelor in S City, and the wealthiest too. But that cold and aloof personality of his is famous all over. If we really get to interview him, our next issue’s sales will definitely break all previous records in the magazine’s history.”

Everyone burst into excited chatter.

“But I heard some gossip,” said Yin Bing, who was known in the office as their “little informant.” “Originally, the editor-in-chief was going to assign the interview with Lu Li to the deputy editor, but for some reason, she turned it down.”

“Ah? Why would she do that? This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! What was she thinking?” one of the female colleagues asked in confusion.

“Who knows?”

“Lin Yun, looks like you’ve hit the jackpot this time. Getting to interview Lu Li — you’ll be getting quite the bonus this month! Don’t forget to treat us to dinner afterward,” a male colleague teased.

The woman called Lin Yun forced out a faint smile, but her eyes darkened. Hit the jackpot? she sneered inwardly. It’s clearly because Mu Wanwan didn’t have the guts to take on such a big task. This time, I’ll make sure to seize the opportunity and prove myself. I’ll let everyone see that I’m better than her.

“Hey, the deputy editor is here.”

“Wanwan-jie, are you heading out?” asked a girl in a bright yellow dress. Her large eyes curved into crescents as she smiled.

Mu Wanwan replied, “Mm, I’ve got something to take care of outside.”

Lin Yun stared at Mu Wanwan’s departing back, nearly grinding her teeth to dust.

After visiting a client with Sister Zheng, Mu Wanwan left on her own. Watching the bustling crowd flow along the street, a hint of loneliness flickered in her expression.

As dusk fell, more street vendors began setting up their stalls.

“Little girl, want some cotton candy?”

The raspy voice caught her attention. Without realizing it, Mu Wanwan had stopped in front of a small stall. She looked up to meet the kindly, smiling eyes of an elderly woman.

Mu Wanwan gave a faint smile and glanced at the soft pink fluff on the stick. “I’ll take one.”

After paying, she accepted the cotton candy and walked away.

Finding an empty bench, she sat down casually.

She stared blankly at the cotton candy in her hand.

Back in high school, every Friday after classes, she used to stop by a little stall in an alley to buy cotton candy — her favorite treat. And him — the first thing he ever gave her was also cotton candy.

She had laughed so hard that day on the street that passersby gave her odd looks. In the end, Lu Li couldn’t stand it anymore and dragged her away.

He walked her home while she held onto the fluffy “cloud” of candy, grinning from ear to ear. At that time, Lu Li’s expression must have been a mix of helplessness and amusement.

He asked, “Mu Wanwan, is a cotton candy really worth getting this happy over?”

And what did she say back then?

“Of course! Cotton candy is sweet and wonderful. There’s nothing in life that can’t be solved with one cotton candy — and if one isn’t enough, then two will do.”

Lu Li laughed — really laughed — and for the first time, she saw him smile so brightly. She was mesmerized, her heart fluttering, so much that the cotton candy nearly slipped from her hand.

Without thinking, she blurted out the words buried deep in her heart:

“Lu Li, your smile looks so beautiful.”
