Chapter – 48
I’m at Your Door
After finishing her work, Mu Wanwan closed her laptop and stretched.
So tired…
She reached for the hot milk on the table and took a few sips until the cup was empty.
Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
Squinting at it, she saw the number she couldn’t forget. Her gaze paused for a few seconds, hesitant, but she still answered.
“I’m at your door.”
That magnetic, husky voice still sounded unbearably good over the phone.
Before Mu Wanwan could respond, the person on the other end hung up first.
She held her phone, glanced at the wall clock—it was already past ten.
After some hesitation, she couldn’t help but go out.
“…Why would he come calling so late at night? Isn’t this inconvenient?”
The moment he got close, Mu Wanwan felt her mind go blank.
What happened last night?
How did she end up sleeping in his living room?
She originally planned to go back to bed, but she couldn’t sleep at all. Every time she closed her eyes, her mind filled with images of Lu Li sleeping.
“Who’s up so early?”
Entering the house, she called out to Jiang Yu, “Mom, I bought breakfast. You don’t have to make it today.”
Mu Wanwan forced a dry smile. “…Good morning. How did you get here?”
She wasn’t a night owl—why was he up so early?
He smiled lightly, quietly stood up, walked around the table, and came to her side. Lu Li squatted down and took the pen from her hand, placing it on the table.
Could she just pretend not to see him and go back to her room?
Forget it, she thought. She’d just walk around a bit, treat it like morning exercise.
Still, she wanted to resist a little. “Mom, let me explain. This is a misunderstanding. Actually…”
“Hm?” Mu Wanwan looked at him in confusion.
She patted her head to calm herself, looked at the still-sleeping person beside her, held onto the table, and carefully got up on tiptoe to head for the door.
Lu Li didn’t speak, only smiling faintly.
Mu Wanwan hummed in acknowledgment and continued translating documents.
“Sigh—”
What?
Lu Li’s gaze was fixed on her. “Really?”
His lips pressed into a thin line; he didn’t ask further.
Oh my…
“You see, I still have so many documents to handle,” she said. Lu Li leaned slightly forward, his voice husky. “Would you really let me stay up all night?”
Noticing her ears turn slightly red, a trace of satisfaction appeared in his eyes. He opened his laptop and began working.
“No,” she denied calmly.
Lu Li’s eyes sparkled with amusement. He nodded slightly. “I need this document urgently tomorrow. I thought about it seriously—asking someone to help late at night isn’t right, so I came to bother you myself.”
That smile—it wasn’t innocent; it was slightly sinister.
His spine stiffened as he realized she was murmuring in her sleep. He paused, then lowered his eyes to the girl leaning on the table, and an involuntary gentle smile appeared on his lips.
The cold wall was behind her. She was trapped in his arms.
Mu Wanwan looked up at him, her beautiful eyes clear and pure. “Lu Li, what’s wrong with you?”
She opened her eyes, then closed them, repeatedly, until she fully woke. Raising her gaze, she saw the man’s handsome face filling her vision.
“Idiot!”
For a moment, she almost screamed.
Passing through the living room, everything was quiet.
His hand was icy, as if soaked in ice water for a long time.
The devil must have been possessed early in the morning.
This was on purpose, right?
Mu Wanwan felt a sudden urge to lose her temper, especially when she saw the ambiguous smile on Jiang Yu’s face—it made her want to bang her head into something soft.
Night deepened, and the crescent moon had quietly hidden behind the clouds.
When Mu Wanwan woke, her neck felt numb.
She was still leaning against his chest, resting her head on his arm?
Almost simultaneously, a cold, large hand grabbed her wrist and pulled her out.
When she returned, she brought breakfast with her.
“Ah Li, don’t go.”
The sky was just brightening, a thin mist still lingering.
“Four years ago, did my mom look for you?” Lu Li asked suddenly. Mu Wanwan paused mid-pen stroke, her curled eyelashes trembling slightly.
No wonder she always felt something was off after coming back—she had forgotten to put her slippers away.
“Ah Li…”
The buns she had gotten up to find food heard the laughter and shivered.
Back at her own house, Mu Wanwan glanced at the time—almost six.
Lu Li lowered his gaze to meet hers; his sharp eyes softened a little. “Help me with something.”
She was speechless, but a faint, silent warmth spread between them.
Then he slowly lowered his head, his thin lips brushing her forehead.
“Wanwan, someone came looking for you,” Jiang Yu said as she approached the entrance, taking the bag of breakfast from her hand, her face glowing with a smile.
Mu Wanwan covered her mouth, her eyes wide in shock. She quickly looked around—still in the living room—and glanced at their clothes, all intact. Only then did she relax.
She flipped through the documents and rolled her eyes at him. “This translation is nothing for you. Are you purposely making me go to work tomorrow with dark circles under my eyes?”
A muffled sound came from the table. Lu Li looked up and saw her peaceful sleeping face, still holding a pen.
He propped his head with one hand, glancing at the slippers she had left behind, and a low laugh escaped his lips.
The moment the door closed, the man slowly opened his tightly shut eyes.
Mu Wanwan froze. Dizzy, she reacted only to find his tall figure blocking her way.
A soft, weak voice sounded. Thinking she had woken, Lu Li was about to get up and leave, but the gentle voice came again.
She rolled back and forth, annoyed, then sat up, her long, smooth hair a mess.
Uh…
A moment later, Mu Wanwan sat cross-legged on the carpet, glancing at the documents in front of her. She raised an eyebrow at the man opposite her. “You want me to help with this?”
Lu Li whispered, his large hand brushing her cheek, moving stray hair from her face. Looking at her delicate face bathed in the light, his eyes grew darker and deeper.
After washing up and changing into sportswear, she quietly left the house.
Who’s scheming this time?
Jiang Yu had already gone back to rest. Mu Wanwan tiptoed to the entrance and opened the door.
Oh my…
She followed Jiang Yu into the living room. Seeing the man sitting on the sofa felt like a bolt from the blue.
She leaned back. “Fine, fine, it’s just translating a document.”
“Morning,” Lu Li smiled lightly.
“You forgot your slippers this morning,” he said calmly.
Now she couldn’t explain it to her mom.
“I know. Both you and Lu Li have said it; no need to repeat it,” Jiang Yu interrupted, smiling.
“?”
Mom, that smile isn’t exactly innocent.
Mu Wanwan turned to Lu Li, frustrated. “What did you tell my mom?”
