Chapter 9
Lucas pressed his lips together and shrugged his shoulders.
“Well, at this point, I can’t be certain about anything.”
“In any case, I’ll protect Mrs. Harrington no matter what happens. Just trust me, Mr. Harrington.”
Lucas nodded slowly and opened the car door.
“Then, I’ll see you again later. If anything happens, contact me anytime, day or night.”
“Yes, I will.”
The matte black sedan sped out of the estate garden. The sky above was cruelly bright and blue.
If Jonathan was involved with the perpetrator of this shooting, he would have made sure all evidence and witnesses were perfectly handled. That meant it would be nearly impossible for Lucas to reach the truth, no matter what he did.
Feeling frustrated at how little he could do to uncover the horrific deception playing out before his eyes, Lucas unbuttoned his shirt and exhaled deeply. He rolled down the window completely and stretched one arm outside.
In that moment, the image of Suzy sleeping like a forest princess flashed before him. The soft, delicate sensation of her leaning against his palm while she slept was still vivid. It was an uncomfortable and strange feeling.
Lately, Suzy’s behavior had been odd. If his intuition was correct, she seemed to be avoiding him. Not by her own will, but he had been treating her extremely well lately—speaking gently, letting her rest on his shoulder while she slept.
